Breaaaaathe in. Breaaaathe out. And write !
Such hectic months my friends since my last “real” connection in June. I think it’s time to share the story of my dA disappearance. I honestly felt a bit sad, even guilty, for not having been there for so long and able to chat with my dearest followers but I have to say that from an art and creative point of view, those months couldn’t have been better.
In fact it reminds me when I was in artschool and we had tight deadlines for our illustrations or projects ; strangely, despite the fact that I was rushed and stressed, the result was oftenly better (even if not “perfect”) than my everyday art. Adrenaline ? Well, situation was pretty the same here, with several deadlines per week during the summer, I think I’ve made, not huge, but GOOD improvements.
So, back to the point, in a nutshell, what happened in my life since June ?
I’ve had the occasion to work on several great projects from June to September, but as it always happen in the art field, clients all knocked at my door at the same time... .
I’m still working on her fictional universe, this time the book was about legendary creatures, so I’ve depicted the two main heroes in their human and animal shapes : one is a wereverine and the other one a phoenix.

You’ve seen the sketch before, here is the final poster for the french tabletop rpg convention.
It was this week end, by the way, and as nice as last year, so thanks to the people who came to see me and get a copy of the poster ! Insectopia
The nice team behind this tabletop rpg asked for more illustrations than I thought they would, and I was really happy they did because even if it was exclusively line works, drawing insects with some human attributes was truly interesting.

Artcamp ô artcamp… what to say… it was awesome !
Titus Lunter is a really good teacher, one of those who teach you to think more than to draw, which is, to me, the most important especially during a short course.
Basically, and during 12 weeks, we had to choose and work on our own game project. Three thematics were given by the teacher to help us then it was up to us : synopsys, light gameplay, researches, thumbnails, concept sheets, and at least one final shot… along with various exercices.
My project is about a grandma left alone on earth while the rest of humanity flew on an orbital city. She, as a shaman, will have to wake up the nature spirits to help her in her quest of seeing her old fiancee again.
Here is most of the work I’ve done. I think this project has some potential, but it’s still in hiatus for now, I’m unsure if I should continue working on it or not.
>>> BACK TO LYON
Right after the end of Artcamp, my partner and I decided to move out and we chose to go to Lyon, the french city where I’ve done my studies, which is, for my part, undirectly linked to art, as the videogame industry here is far more developped.
Finding a flat was kind of an epic tale but it’s done now and since yesterday I can breath a little !
With the move, October was full of administrative shitness, and projects were over so I decided to take part to a light challenge to keep the rythm but no, not inktober… the counter-party you know : #drawlloween ! There was a theme per day based on halloween folklore. A perfect occasion for me to train my character design skills while being totally free, I’ll show you that in another journal !
And what about those improvements ?
Well I don’t know exactly, it’s still fresh, I feel like I’ve made a huge step in term or art. My skills, from a technical point of view, did not improve that much, but mentally, I learned to say NO to realism, I suddenly stopped thinking it was a prerequisite, and just had fun ! Yes, fun !
I really have to thanks Artcamp for that, because I chose to add some difficulty to the exercices and worked in a style which wasn’t really familiar (cartoon) for my game project. And again... it’s was fun ! But also opened kind of a lock in my head.
It made years I didn’t have “true” pleasure while making art, I always strive for improvement and with social networks flooding you with 3D and realistic digital art, it’s easy to be confused and label those works as “the best”, the “wanted per the industry”.
At least I did, unconsciously. Truth is I was so much obsessed with perfection while doing realistic-in-becoming pieces that it wiped all the fun away, every fucking time. And I was thinking work became boring because I was to slow to finish my illustrations, so I tried to paint faster, which left imperfections, and so on,... vicious circle, right
But now that I’ve lowered the level of realism in my work a bit, the level of perfectionnism follows, which gives me more time (and will !) to concentrate on technical aspects such as colors per example, to simply appreciate my own work and to avoid boredom. I feel released ~~ !
On that point my Drawlloween paintings and sketches were also a nice transition, and I hope you’ll see the difference when you’ll check them, but also understand why my style has taken a new direction.
Anyway, I think the pleasure I took while doing post-Artcamp works transcribes well in the pieces themselves, at least more than in my past illustrations.
I’m now in this childish period, when all looks new and I feel like i’ve to re-learn tons of things to improve this new style, but …
Best part of doing Art is about learning isn’t ?
